Reopening 25th September,at 10.00 am

The Naples Nitsch Museum gets a makeover for the two-year period from 2020 to 2022, presenting a new core of works by the undisputed master of Actionism, Hermann Nitsch, from 25th September. The Museum will behome to Nitsch’s 2018 Action Wrecks, created for its tenth anniversary, and will also offer a new collection of paintings and drawings.

The exhibition openswitha performance of the158.aktion with the Napoli 2020 symphony played by 26 members of the Nuova Orchestra Scarlatti, under the baton of Andrea Cusumano. In order to comply with the Government's requirements for the containment of Covid-19, the performance will be held in the museum spaces, and attendance is by invitation only.

Music is an integral part of the new total art action, which Nitsch began practisingin 1957 with his OrgienMysterien Theater (“Theatre of Orgies and Mysteries”), an art form involving all the senses.

Despite their name, the “Wrecks” presented atthe Museum from 25 September testify to a promise of return – resurrection from dissolution – as,for Nitsch, painting and drawing celebrate light as a condition for experiencing the world. During his time in Naples, in the days leading up to the exhibition, the artist will create new paintings as a continuation ofhis research into colourinspired by the brightness of flowers.

This constellation of “vital seismographies” exemplifies Nitsch's work as a persistentstriving for the liberation of sensitivity from the discipline of an anaesthetizing civilization, a practice affirming life through the continuous referencing of the olfactory, tactile, and visual correspondences of colour.

Sinfonia Napoli 2020 seals this partnership, dating back to 1974, between Hermann Nitsch and Giuseppe Morra in the name of the creative force of art and the continuity of a project culminating in joyful celebrations for the twelve years of the Nitsch Museum.
